Rose discusses how nice it was to visit and to listen to your new poem and how they make her feel. She says how Wonderful Mrs. M. is. she continues to discuss a Dealer he should beware of and the price for the ist edition. She has no mony in the bank. Mr. R is going to the country fore a rest. She would like the Markhams to come to Dr. Millers for an old fashion big house dinner. She dose'nt want him to send any editions but reserve 3 of them. Business is good and i'm donating $100 to the Red Cross. SHe is going to buy up all "The Children in Bondage" and she wants Mr.M to sign them and sell them and give the mooney to the Red Cross. Some day i will publish my new poems. Wants Mr. M to write a few words about"Cleomenes".

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
